Qitaihe is located in eastern Heilongjiang Province, bordering Shuangyashan, Jixi, Mudanjiang, Harbin, Jiamusi and Hegang. As one of China's three major protected coal mining areas, Qitaihe is an emerging city dominated by coal and timber processing industries.
Blessed with abundant mineral resources, Qitaihe's coal field is one of the three rare nationally protected mining areas. It is the most important coking coal production base in Northeast China and Heilongjiang's largest anthracite production base.
