Shima Park
Shima Park: A Green Sanctuary in the Heart of Loudi
Nestled in the bustling urban center of Loudi City, Hunan Province, lies Shima Park, a verdant oasis whose name echoes the area's historical topography—the "Stone Horse Mountain." This expansive 22.5-hectare retreat is strategically positioned for both convenience and escape, located a mere half-kilometer from the modern Loudi Railway Station. Bordered by Xinxing Road to the east, Xiangyang Street to the south, Chunyuan Road to the west, and Yuetang Street to the north, the park serves as the city's green lung and a premier destination for recreation and tranquility.
A Masterpiece of Natural Landscape Design The park's design philosophy embraces and highlights its natural terrain, masterfully crafted as a naturalistic landscape garden where mountainous features dominate, accounting for approximately three-fifths of the total area. The layout is intelligently divided into three integrated yet distinct functional zones: sightseeing and appreciation, entertainment and leisure, and service management. This thoughtful zoning ensures a harmonious balance between active recreation and peaceful contemplation, allowing different activities to coexist without interference.
Exploring the Park's Iconic Landscapes The park's visual and spiritual core is defined by two magnificent features.
The Shima Pavilion: A Vista Point Dominating the skyline is the majestic Shima Pavilion, the park's principal scenic attraction. This five-story structure, soaring approximately 18 meters high, offers visitors a commanding perspective. Its elevated position makes it an ideal spot for panoramic views of the surrounding cityscape and the park's own diverse landscapes below.
The Yuma Lake: A Serene Centerpiece Complementing the pavilion's vertical grandeur is the expansive Yuma Lake, the park's central water body covering over 50 acres (about 8 acres). The lake acts as a reflective canvas for the sky and surrounding greenery, enhancing the park's serene atmosphere. Together, the pavilion and the lake create a classic Chinese garden aesthetic, embodying the harmony between architectural form and natural element.
The Summit Experience: Reaching the City's Peak A unique geographical distinction of Shima Park is that it incorporates the highest natural point within the Loudi city proper. The main peak of the historic Stone Horse Mountain, rising over 40 meters, is situated within the park's boundaries. This inclusion provides visitors with the exceptional opportunity for a gentle yet rewarding hike, culminating in a登高远眺 (dēng gāo yuǎn tiào)—the cherished Chinese tradition of climbing high to gaze into the distance. The summit rewards hikers with refreshing breezes and unparalleled, sweeping vistas.
Amenities and Atmosphere Beyond its signature sights, the park is adorned with a variety of classic Chinese garden structures, including elegant waterside pavilions (水榭) and decorative kiosks (亭台), seamlessly integrated into the hills and alongside the lake. These structures provide shaded rest stops, picturesque frames for photography, and peaceful corners for reflection. The meticulously maintained paths wind through the landscape, inviting leisurely strolls, morning tai chi sessions, or casual family picnics.
Visitor Information Shima Park is committed to accessibility, operating on a 24-hour open schedule, allowing visitors to experience its charm at dawn, under the midday sun, or during a tranquil evening walk. Its central location and proximity to major transportation hubs like the railway station make it an effortlessly accessible destination for both city residents and visiting travelers seeking a respite from urban energy.
