West Lake
A Visitor's Guide to Hangzhou's West Lake
Introduction: A Masterpiece of Nature and Culture
West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011, is among China’s first batch of national 5A-level tourist attractions and ranks as one of the country’s top ten scenic wonders. Its iconic landscape, featured on the back of China’s one-yuan banknote, underscores its unique status in the nation’s cultural and natural heritage. Blending poetic landscapes with centuries of human artistry, West Lake offers a serene escape where history, mythology, and breathtaking scenery converge.
The Layout: A Classical Design
The lake’s charm lies in its deliberate and harmonious layout, often summarized as “One Hill, Two Pagodas, Three Islands, Three Causeways, and Five Lakes.” This structure provides a framework for exploration, with the famous “Ten Scenes of West Lake” scattered throughout, each highlighting seasonal beauty or literary lore.
One Hill: Solitary Hill (Gu Shan)
Situated between the inner and outer lakes, this island-like hill is a cultural hub, home to historical sites like the Zhongshan Park and the former residence of poet Lin Hejing. Two Pagodas: Leifeng Pagoda and Baochu Pagoda
Leifeng Pagoda, famed for its association with the Legend of the White Snake, offers panoramic lake views from its summit. Across the water, the slender Baochu Pagoda stands guard on the north shore, often called the “Lady Pagoda” for its elegant silhouette.Three Islands: Xiaoyingzhou, Huixin Pavilion, and Ruangong Isle
These man-made islands, created from dredged lake sediment, are models of traditional Chinese garden design. The largest, Xiaoyingzhou, is a “lake within a lake” and a prime spot for viewing lotus flowers in summer.Three Causeways: Su, Bai, and Yanggong
These dykes double as scenic walkways. Su Causeway, built by poet-governor Su Dongpo, is lined with peach and willow trees. Bai Causeway, associated with another poet, Bai Juyi, connects the city to Solitary Hill. Yanggong Causeway offers a quieter, more rustic experience.Five Lake Areas: The water itself is divided into five distinct sections—Outer West Lake, North Inner Lake, West Inner Lake, South Lake, and Yue Lake—each with its own character and vistas.
Exploring the Ten Scenes
The Ten Scenes are poetic vignettes that capture the lake’s essence at different times and conditions. Key highlights include:
* Spring Dawn at Su Causeway: Vibrant spring colors along the dyke.
* Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake: A tranquil spot for moon viewing in autumn.
* Three Pools Mirroring the Moon: The iconic islet with three stone pagodas that create magical moon reflections.
* Melting Snow on Broken Bridge: A winter scene steeped in legend, where the white snake tale began.
