Bashan Grand Canyon
A Traveler's Guide to Bashan Grand Canyon: Nature's Masterpiece in Dazhou
Nestled in the northeastern fringe of Xuanhan County, Dazhou City, at the strategic confluence of Sichuan and Chongqing, lies the breathtaking Bashan Grand Canyon. This destination is far more than a single scenic area; it is a multifaceted jewel holding prestigious titles including a National AAAAA Tourist Attraction, a component of the Dabashan National Geopark, a National Forest Park, and a Provincial Nature Reserve. It serves as a living museum of natural fold structures, a protected habitat for the rare Thuja sutchuenensis (崖柏), one of Sichuan's Top Ten Red Leaf Tourism Destinations, a rich repository of ancient Ba People's culture, and the birthplace of the nationally recognized intangible cultural heritage, the Tujia "Haocao Luogu" (Weeding Gong and Drum) folk performance.
A Landscape of Epic Proportions and Intricate Detail The grandeur of Bashan Grand Canyon is defined by its sheer scale and intricate natural composition. Encompassing approximately 575.13 square kilometers with a forest coverage rate exceeding 80%, the air here is exceptionally fresh and rich in negative oxygen ions. The landscape is poetically described as having mountains for its skeleton and water for its lifeblood. It is a pristine, ancient canvas painted solely by nature's hand, where colossal peaks, winding waterways, and mysterious caves are seamlessly fused into a majestic panorama stretching over 500 square kilometers, earning it the laudatory phrase, "Not the Three Gorges, yet surpassing them in beauty."
The scenic area is systematically yet poetically categorized into "Four Valleys, Five Zones, Six Veins, Seven Wonders" (encompassing landscapes, cliffs, caves, waters, objects, funnels, and folk customs), "Eight Oddities" (such as the Hurricane Cave, Contending Water Colors, Mountain-top Fish, and the Leaf-Veined Characters), along with "Nine Bends, Ten Peaks, Hundred Caves, and Thousand Sights." The main canyon itself stretches approximately 140 kilometers in length.
Strategic Location and Accessibility For travelers, its location is conveniently accessible: * Approximately 80 km from Xuanhan County town. * About 125 km from Dazhou Railway Station. * Roughly 124 km from Dazhou West Bus Station and 108 km from Dazhou North Bus Station. * Around 134 km from Dazhou Airport. * Merely 33 km from the Xinhua exit of the Da-Shan Expressway (Dazhou-Shanxi), making self-driving a highly viable option.
Four Distinct Zones, Four Temporal Journeys The景区 is thoughtfully divided into four major thematic zones, each offering a unique experience tied to a different era: * Taoxi Valley Leisure & Experience Zone: Representing the "present," this area focuses on recreational activities and immersive natural encounters. * Luopan Ding Wellness & Spiritual Nourishment Zone: Symbolizing "a hundred years," this zone is dedicated to health, tranquility, and panoramic high-altitude views. * Baren Valley Folk Custom & Leisure Zone: Embodies "a thousand years" of history, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the ancient Ba people. * Xikou Lake Ecological Sightseeing Zone: Representing "billions of years," this area highlights pristine lakes and geological wonders shaped over eons.
A Sanctuary of Biodiversity Bashan Grand Canyon is a thriving haven for wildlife and flora. It is home to over 252 species of vertebrates, including more than 30 rare species, with over 20 under national key protection. Its plant life is equally impressive, boasting over 400 species of higher plants. It shelters nationally protected first-class plants like the Chinese Yew (红豆杉), Dawn Redwood (水杉), and Ginkgo (银杏). As a crucial sanctuary for the internationally protected, critically endangered Thuja sutchuenensis, and abundant with precious medicinal herbs such as honeysuckle, lily, Chinese thorowax root (柴胡), codonopsis (党参), angelica (当归), dendrobium (石斛), and magnolia bark (厚朴), the region rightfully holds the reputation as "The Home of Chinese Medicinal Herbs."
