Fushun Confucian Temple
Fushun Confucius Temple was built in 1044 during the Northern Song dynasty, after nearly 400 years of cultural stagnation in this remote border town. In 1036, the imperial court sent eminent scholar Zhou Yanjun to serve as prefect and champion education. In 1042, Fushun finally produced its first successful jinshi degree holder, Li Mian.
To celebrate this milestone, locals funded construction of a temple dedicated to Confucius in 1044. Dubbed the "Temple of Literature and Learning", its centerpiece was a stone "Goose Pagoda Stele" engraved with the names of local examination candidates. Thereafter, successive magistrates taught at the temple, transforming Fushun into a center of Confucian learning.
