Nestled in the quaint village of Jimingyi in Huailai County, Zhangjiakou, Jimingyi Ancient City stands as a testament to the Ming Dynasty's architectural legacy, with its roots dating back to the period between 1368 and 1644. Encompassing an expansive area of approximately 22,000 square meters, this well-preserved relay station is a captivating blend of historical charm and cultural significance.
Architectural Marvel:
The ancient city's layout, nearly square in shape, spans a circumference of around 1,891.8 meters. The exterior of the city walls is crafted from brick, while the inner layers consist of rammed earth. With a base width ranging from 8 to 11 meters, a top width of 3 to 5 meters, and a towering height of 11 meters, the walls are adorned with four corner platforms evenly distributed along its periphery. Two city gates, each flanked by a watchtower, punctuate the east and west sides, providing access to the meticulously planned urban landscape.
Inside the city, a network of five intersecting roads weaves through twelve distinct regions of varying sizes. The central hub hosts the relay station, while the northwest quadrant features a stable for horses, the northeast quadrant houses the relay warehouse, and along the city's southern edge runs a parallel route of the ancient postal road. Remnants of historic shops and residences further enrich the city's historical tapestry.
