The Majestic Great Wall at Guguan: A Stalwart Witness to History

Guguan Great Wall, located in Xinguan Village, Pingding County, on the western side of the Taihang Mountains in Shanxi Province, stretches from Niangziguan to Baihui Village, covering a formidable length of 20 kilometers. Recognized as a crucial pass on the Inner Great Wall, Guguan Great Wall stands out for being one of the few well-preserved stone-built sections, earning it the distinction of being the earliest Inner Great Wall of the Ming Dynasty. Renowned Great Wall expert Luo Zhe-wen even likened its charm to that of the famous Badaling section.

Dating back to 369 B.C., Guguan Great Wall predates the more famous Ming Dynasty Great Wall by 155 years. Although most of the surviving remnants are from the Ming Dynasty, the history of Guguan can be traced back 2,374 years, making it a rare historical gem in China. Guguan is part of the four famous passes in the west of Beijing during the Ming Dynasty, along with Juyongguan, Zhijingguan, and Daomaguan, collectively forming the protective barrier for the capital.

Throughout its long history, Guguan has witnessed significant historical events, hosting the passage of emperors, generals, and literary figures. It played a role in events such as the campaigns of Qin Wang Jian against the state of Zhao, the return of Qin Shihuang's corpse to Xianyang, Han Xin's famous "Backwater Battle," the suppression of the An Lushan Rebellion by Guo Ziyi and Li Guangbi, and even Emperor Kangxi's inspection tour.

Despite facing the ravages of time, Guguan Great Wall endured additional challenges from the construction of roads during the Republic of China in 1932 and the subsequent building of the 307 National Road and Taiyuan-Jiuguan Expressway after the founding of the People's Republic of China. These projects inevitably caused damage to this crucial cultural relic. However, starting in 1998, with support from higher authorities and guidance from cultural heritage experts, the villagers of Xinguan, numbering just over 600, embarked on a journey of restoration. Through voluntary labor and donations, they successfully revitalized several kilometers of the ancient wall, watchtowers, parapets, beacon towers, gates, the Xifeng Temple, and bridges crossing the 307 National Road and Taiyuan-Jiuguan Expressway, restoring the former glory of this historic pass.
