The lake body stretches northeast, its northern end connected by a waterway to the adjacent Xianrendong (Immortal's Cave) Lake. This strategic position makes it a perfect starting point for exploration. The true magic of Putang Xiuse lies in its reflective beauty. The calm waters act as a perfect mirror, capturing the dramatic silhouettes of the surrounding pinnacles and isolated karst peaks, creating a picturesque scene of doubled grandeur that changes with the light.

The Seasonal Spectacle: A Summer Transformation

While beautiful year-round, Putang Xiuse undergoes a breathtaking metamorphosis in the summer months. This is when the lake fully earns its poetic name. Vast stretches of the water's surface become adorned with lush, green lotus leaves and delicate pink and white blossoms. The "Lotus Pond" becomes a reality, offering a classic and serene Chinese landscape. The sight of traditional flat-bottomed boats gently gliding through narrow channels carved through the sea of flowers is iconic. The air carries a faint, sweet fragrance, and the vibrant colors against the backdrop of grey karst hills create a visually stunning and photogenic panorama that defines the Puzhehei experience for many visitors.

Planning Your Visit: Essential Information

Getting to Putang Xiuse (Puzhehei Scenic Area)

Reaching Putang Xiuse involves traveling to the Puzhehei Scenic Area, primarily via the county seat of Qiubei.

  • By Long-Distance Bus (Recommended Route): The most common and economical approach is from Kunming. Buses depart from Kunming's East Coach Station to Qiubei County. The journey covers approximately 300 kilometers. Multiple daily departures are available, typically with fares ranging from approximately 114 to 138 RMB. It is advisable to check the latest schedule, as morning and midday departures are most frequent. Upon arrival at Qiubei Bus Station, transfer to the local public bus service to Puzhehei. These buses run regularly from about 8:00 to 17:30, with departures every 30 to 60 minutes. The fare is very affordable, around 2-3 RMB, and the trip covers the final 13 kilometers to the scenic area entrance at Putang Xiuse.

  • By Air (A Less Convenient Option): The nearest airport is Wenshan Puzhehei Airport, located in Yanshan County. However, it is still about 80 kilometers from the Puzhehei Scenic Area. Upon landing, you would need to take a shuttle or bus from the airport to Qiubei County (buses run frequently from ~7:00-18:00, fare ~31 RMB), and then transfer to the local Puzhehei bus as described above. Alternatively, a taxi directly from the airport to Puzhehei is possible but costly, with fares typically between 100 and 200 RMB. Due to the required transfers and additional time, this option is generally not recommended for most travelers unless it connects seamlessly with your broader itinerary.

Admission and Fees

Access to the villages around Putang Xiuse and the general lakeside area is free of charge. The primary costs are associated with boat tours and cave visits. The scenic area offers various ticket combinations:

  • Comprehensive Ticket: A popular option is the all-inclusive boat and cave pass. This typically covers a return boat journey (often through the lotus areas) and admission to several major caves like Moon Cave (Yueliang Dong), Torch Cave (Huoba Dong), Immortal's Cave (Xianren Dong), and Guanyin Cave. The full price for this联票 (liánpiào) is around 200 RMB per person.
  • Discounted Tickets: Concessions are available for university and school students, elderly visitors, and disabled military personnel upon presentation of valid ID. The discounted rate for the all-inclusive pass is approximately 170 RMB.
  • Individual Attraction Tickets: If you prefer to explore specific sites separately, you can purchase tickets for individual caves:
    • Guanyin Cave: ~15 RMB
    • Moon Cave / Torch Cave: ~20 RMB each
    • Immortal's Cave: ~20 RMB (note: boat fees within this cave are included in its ticket price).

Operating Hours

The Puzhehei Scenic Area, including the Putang Xiuse entrance and its boat piers, is generally open daily from 7:30 to 17:30. It is always prudent to verify the latest timings, especially during off-peak seasons or around public holidays, as schedules may be subject to change.

Suggested Duration

To fully appreciate Putang Xiuse, embark on a boat tour, and explore one or two of the nearby caves, you should allocate a minimum of 3 to 4 hours. A more leisurely pace, allowing for photography, a lakeside stroll, and visiting multiple sites, can easily fill half a day or more.
