It represents not merely a scenic spot but the quintessential embodiment of a classical Chinese pastoral dream, particularly during the autumn months when it transforms into a breathtaking canvas of fiery reds and ethereal mists.
2. The Twin Villages: Chengcun and Daicun
The heart of the scenic area is formed by two ancient, charming villages: Chengcun and Daicun. These are not simply backdrops for the autumn foliage but living, breathing communities with distinct characters, whose existence harmonizes perfectly with the natural spectacle.
2.1. Daicun: The Village of the Ancient Post Road Daicun is characterized by a sense of grounded history. The village is intricately threaded by time-worn bluestone-paved paths, remnants of ancient postal routes that once connected distant realms. Walking these smooth, moss-touched flagstones, visitors can almost hear the echoes of past travelers and merchants, adding a layer of historical narrative to the visual feast.
2.2. Chengcun: The Village of Mist and Dwellings In contrast, Chengcun offers a more ethereal and painterly scene. Its traditional Hui-style architecture, with white walls and dark grey tiles (fen qiang dai wa), provides a stark, elegant contrast to the vibrant natural colors. The magic of Chengcun, however, truly unveils itself at dawn. The village is uniquely positioned, nestled against a limestone hill and surrounded on three sides by ancient maple trees. As night recedes, cool air settles into the valley, forming thick, creamy bands of morning mist that wrap around the hillsides and suspend themselves at the mid-level of the trees. Almost simultaneously, wisps of cooking smoke begin to curl upwards from the chimneys of village homes. These two elements—the natural mist and the human-made smoke—intertwine and coalesce within the small basin of Chengcun.

4. Practical Visitor Information
4.1. Location and Transportation The scenic area is located approximately 58 kilometers from Wuyuan County's main town (Ziyang) and its high-speed rail station, and about 55 kilometers from Wuyuan North Station. * Public Transport: There is no direct shuttle bus from the high-speed rail station to Shicheng. The most common route is to take a taxi or local transport to Wuyuan North Station (also known as the bus station) and catch a direct bus to Shicheng. * Alternative Route: If direct buses to Shicheng are no longer running for the day, an option is to take a bus bound for the Lingyan Cave Scenic Area, which is about 6 kilometers from Shicheng. From there, visitors can arrange local transportation (e.g., a taxi or motorized rickshaw) for the short remaining distance. * Important Note for Photographers: Visitors staying in the county town who wish to capture the sunrise and morning mist must depart very early, ideally before 5:00 AM, to ensure arrival at the village viewpoints in time for the first light.
4.2. Opening Hours and Visit Duration The Shicheng village area itself is accessible 24 hours a day, every day of the year. This unlimited access is crucial for visitors aiming to experience the early morning phenomena. A typical visit to fully appreciate the scenery, wander the villages, and explore the surroundings generally requires 1 to 3 hours.
