Shanhaiguan (the first pass in the world)
Located at the eastern starting point of the Great Wall, the first pass built in 1381 during the Ming Dynasty, the dividing line between the inner and outer regions, and an important protective barrier for Beijing during the Ming dynasty, Shanhaiguan (the First Pass Under Heaven) is a well-preserved and complete military defense system.
Consisting of a walled city, an outer city, a moat, bastions, watchtowers, and signal towers, this unique defensive structure has earned it the reputation of being the "one and only key to the two capitals" and the "first pass under heaven" among the many dangerous passes of the Great Wall. The fort's intricate design and excellent layout reflect the wisdom and planning of ancient Chinese military strategy.
The pass is accessible by taking bus routes 13, 25, 302, 303, 33, or the Shanhaiguan Scenic Area shuttle to the "First Pass Under Heaven" stop. Visitors can also cycle or walk along the moat and walls for an up-close view of this historical landmark.
Admission fees vary depending on the season: 40 RMB during the tourist season (from May 1 to October 31) and 15 RMB during the off-season (from November 30 to April 30). Please note that all fees are subject to change based on official updates.
