A Traveler's Guide to Zhaoxing Dong Village: China's Largest Dong Settlement

Nestled in the picturesque hills of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture in Guizhou Province, Zhaoxing Dong Village stands as one of the largest and most significant Dong ethnic communities in China. With a resident population of over 6,000 people, it is often revered as the "First Village of Dong Country." This living cultural museum offers visitors an immersive journey into the architectural traditions, social structures, and daily rhythms of the Dong people, far removed from the bustle of modern cities. The village's layout, following the contours of a small river and organized around its iconic Drum Towers, presents a harmonious blend of human habitation and natural landscape that has endured for centuries.

Getting to Zhaoxing Dong Village

Reaching Zhaoxing requires some planning but is part of the adventure into this culturally rich region. The primary access points are the nearby cities of Congjiang and Liping.

  • From Congjiang:

    • By High-Speed Rail (Most Convenient): The Congjiang High-Speed Rail Station is approximately 3 kilometers from Zhaoxing. Upon arrival at the station's affiliated bus terminal, travelers can board a local minibus that goes directly to the main entrance of the village. It is noted that using this direct service typically allows visitors to enter without needing to purchase an additional shuttle bus ticket.
    • By Regular Bus: Alternatively, direct buses to Zhaoxing depart from Congjiang's main bus station at 07:50 and 13:00 daily, with a journey time of around 3 hours. A more flexible, though multi-step, option involves taking a bus from Congjiang to Luoxiang Town. Buses on this route run frequently from 7:00 to 17:30, with intervals ranging from 40 minutes to 2 hours, and take about 2 hours. From Luoxiang, you can hire a local motorized tricycle for the final 20-minute leg to Zhaoxing or enjoy a scenic walk of roughly half an hour. Visitors from Guangdong and Guangxi provinces may find it convenient to travel directly to Congjiang Railway Station in Luoxiang Town via train and then transfer to Zhaoxing.

  • From Liping:

    • By Bus: Liping Bus Station operates nine direct buses to Zhaoxing daily, with services from 07:20 to 16:45 at intervals of approximately 60 to 90 minutes.
    • By Car: For those driving, take the expressway at Liping South Station heading south. Exit at Congjiang East Station (Luoxiang), turn left onto the main road (the trunk road from the Luoxiang intersection to Zhaoxing), and continue straight to reach the village. The drive takes about 45 minutes.

Village Layout and Architectural Heritage

The visual and structural soul of Zhaoxing is defined by two key elements: its stilted houses and its communal Drum Towers.

  • Ganlan-style Stilted Houses: The entire village is composed of traditional Ganlan (dry-barrier) dwellings, commonly known as Diaojiaolou. These wooden structures are built on stilts along the banks of a meandering stream, creating a breathtaking, cascading effect against the mountainous backdrop. This architectural style is practical, providing ventilation, preventing dampness, and offering shelter for livestock underneath, while being aesthetically mesmerizing in its orderly yet organic arrangement.

  • Social Organization: The 'Tuan' System: Uniquely, all residents of Zhaoxing share the surname Lu, belonging to the same vast Dong clan. The village is not divided by streets but by five natural sections called "Tuan." Each Tuan is centered around its own magnificent Drum Tower. This system is so integral to local life that addresses for guesthouses and other locations within the village are often given using the name of the respective Tuan as the primary reference point.

The Heart of the Community: The Drum Towers

The Drum Tower is the undisputed symbol of any Dong village, and Zhaoxing is famed for having five of them, one for each Tuan. They are far more than just landmarks; they are the vibrant hubs of public life.

  • Function and Significance: These towering pavilions serve as the town hall, social club, and leisure plaza for the community. Here, villagers gather to discuss affairs, celebrate festivals, entertain guests, share stories, or simply rest and socialize. The sound of the drum historically served to alert the community or call meetings.
  • Architectural Grandeur: Zhaoxing's five Drum Towers are a spectacular sight. Each one varies in height, size, and decorative detail, showcasing different artistic interpretations within the traditional Dong architectural framework. Their pagoda-like forms, constructed entirely of wood without nails, using intricate mortise-and-tenon joints, represent a pinnacle of Chinese folk carpentry. Seeing them standing together, yet each distinct, is a truly awe-inspiring experience.

Practical Visitor Information

  • Admission Ticket:

    • Standard Adult Ticket: 80 RMB (valid year-round).
    • Free Admission: Applies to children with a height of 1.4 meters or below (or aged 6 and below), seniors aged 60 and above, accredited journalists, licensed tour guides, individuals with disabilities, and active-duty military personnel upon presentation of valid official identification.
    • Additional Local Exemptions: Residents of Liping, Luoxiang, and Guandong towns holding local ID cards or household registration books are exempt. From July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022, National Defense Mobilization Advanced Individuals with a valid preferential certificate are also exempt. Notably, since April 1, 2021, residents of Foshan City and Hangzhou City can enjoy free entry upon presenting valid identification.

  • Opening Hours: The village is open to visitors from 08:00 to 22:00 daily throughout the year.

  • Suggested Duration: A full day is recommended to adequately explore the different Tuan, appreciate the Drum Towers and wind-and-rain bridges, wander the ancient lanes, and absorb the local atmosphere. Staying overnight in a traditional guesthouse allows for a more profound experience, including the possibility of enjoying evening cultural performances.
