Situated along the popular tourist route of Chengdu - Mount Emei - Xichang - Kunming, Ertan National Forest Park covers over 600,000 acres. The T-shaped reservoir at Ertan Dam spans 150,000 acres, surrounded by over 400,000 acres of forests. Forest coverage exceeds 50%.

The park includes the entire reservoir upstream from Ertan Dam and the first mountain ridge within Panzhihua City limits, extending to Tengqiao River estuary in Yanyuan County. With overlapping peaks, secluded valleys, alpine lakes, and dense woodlands, it's an ideal spot for leisure and recuperation.

With elevations from 1,200 to 4,196 meters, Ertan lies in the Hengduan Mountains characterized by high mountains and steep slopes. The climate transitions from subtropical to alpine. Vegetation is distributed vertically in distinct zones - evergreen broadleaf forest, Yunnan pine forest, oak-pine mixed forest, mountain conifer forest, and subalpine conifer forest.
