Zhuquan Village Tourist Resort
Subtitle: A Journey into an Ancient Oasis of Bamboo and Springs
1. Introduction to Zhuyuan Village Nestled in the northern part of Yinan County, approximately 12 kilometers from the county seat in Shandong Province, lies the ancient and enchanting Zhuyuan Village (Bamboo Spring Village). This serene destination, home to a community of 469 residents and spanning an area of 1,200 acres (approximately 1800 Chinese mu), offers a rare glimpse into a traditional Chinese pastoral idyll. Originally known as Quanshang Village during the Yuan and Ming dynasties, it was renamed Zhuyuan Village during the reign of Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty. The village's unique charm stems from its harmonious integration with nature: springs emerge from the hillsides, lush bamboo groves thrive thanks to the abundant water, and generations of villagers have built their stone houses around these life-giving springs. With bamboo forests concealing quaint cottages, crystal-clear streams flowing past every household, fragrant orchards, and content, long-living residents, Zhuyuan Village stands as a quintessential "Peach Blossom Spring"—a utopian retreat rarely found in northern China.
2. A Landscape of Harmony and History 2.1. Auspicious Geography and the Vital Spring The village is strategically positioned according to traditional Chinese Feng Shui principles, resting against the Jade Emperor Mountain (Yuhuang Shan) to the north, flanked by Stone Dragon Mountain (Shilong Shan) in the center, Phoenix Ridge (Fenghuang Ling) to the left, and the Xiangshan River to the right, with vast farmlands stretching out before it. At the heart of this auspicious setting is the namesake "Zhuyuan" spring, surrounded by dense bamboo. This spring is the soul of the village. Its water maintains a constant temperature year-round and is rich in over a dozen essential trace minerals. Certified as meeting the national standards for natural drinking mineral water, this pristine water is credited by locals for their longevity and notable lack of serious illnesses.
2.2. Centuries of Legacy and Notable Residents With a history stretching back at least four centuries, the village is predominantly inhabited by the Gao family, followed by the Zhao family. Its historical significance is underscored by its connection to notable figures like Gao Mingheng, a Vice Minister of War in the late Ming Dynasty, and Gao Jiong, a ceremonial official at the Heng Princely Estate in Qingzhou. Both were members of the Gao clan and chose this very location to build their country villas to enjoy its natural delights. The foundations of these retreats still remain. According to the Gao family genealogy, the founding ancestor who settled here was Gao Mingshi, a cousin of Gao Mingheng. When he arrived, the village was still called Quanshang Village. Gao Mingheng himself sought refuge here from worldly affairs, building a thatched cottage and planting red plum trees. He is also said to have emulated the ancient literati tradition of the "Floating Wine Cup along the Winding Stream" (a poetic drinking game inspired by calligrapher Wang Xizhi) amidst the bamboo groves with friends and family.
3. The Core Experience: Bamboo, Water, and Timeless Retreat 3.1. The Essence of Zhuyuan: Intertwined Beauty Zhuyuan Ancient Village derives its poetic rhythm from the bamboo and its vibrant spirit from the water. The whispering bamboo groves and the ever-flowing springs create an atmosphere of profound tranquility and rustic elegance.
3.2. Meiyuan: A Legacy Reimagined Standing as a testament to this literary and historical heritage is "Meiyuan" (Plum Fate Garden), a complex of buildings constructed in the Ming-Qing architectural style on the original site of Gao Mingheng's thatched cottage. This group of leisure courtyards and halls masterfully blends into the landscape. Amidst a sea of green, several red plum trees add a touch of vibrant color and deeper serenity. The combination of simple thatched structures with more refined tile-roofed halls achieves a perfect balance of rustic charm and refined taste. For visitors, arriving here and encountering the plum blossoms is considered a special缘分 (fate or destiny), as echoed in the couplets found here: "In this life, fate makes the plum my companion; in the next, I shall regret not having the bamboo as my neighbor," and "By the bamboo, one finds inspiration to tune the zither; on the stream, forgetting worldly schemes, one abandons the fishing rod." Staying overnight in such an environment is an experience designed to make one forget the urge to return to the outside world.
