Zhangbi Ancient Fortress
Unveiling the Mysteries of Zhangbi Ancient Castle in Jinzhong
Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Longfeng Town, Jinzhong City, Zhangbi Village, also known as Zhangbi Ancient Castle, stands as a testament to strategic brilliance and cultural heritage. Perched at an altitude of approximately 1040 meters in the southeastern folds of the JieXiu Basin, this ancient fortress leverages its geographical advantage of being difficult to attack and easy to defend.
Zhangbi Ancient Castle, colloquially called "Bright Castle Above, Dark Tunnels Below," boasts an intricate network of underground passages spanning about 3000 meters across three levels. Above ground, a formidable wall stretches approximately 1300 meters, enclosing an area of around 120,000 square meters. The pièce de résistance within the castle is the "Dragon Spine Street," a meandering thoroughfare crafted from red stones, flanked by five grand temple complexes.
This unique cultural site, distinct from the "Grand Courtyard Culture" of the Jin merchants and the "Ancient City Culture" of Pingyao, is a rare gem of dual-purpose ancient architecture in China, serving both military and civilian functions.
Subterranean Marvels:
- The subterranean labyrinth, mysterious and convoluted, comprises three layers. The upper layer features troughs for feeding livestock, while the middle layer houses dugouts for sentinels and storage caves for provisions.
- Noteworthy features include horse troughs, general-purpose caves, courtyard wells, granaries, flood prevention measures, wall apertures for communication, and even covert assassination mechanisms.
The origins of the underground passages remain an enigma, perplexing archaeologists as to when and by whom these were constructed.
