Exploring the Timeless Grandeur of Pingyao Ancient County Office
Nestled adjacent to the tranquil "Listening to Rain Tower" in the southern part of the city, Pingyao Ancient County Office stands as a testament to ancient governance, with its origins tracing back to the Northern Wei dynasty. It proudly remains one of the best-preserved ancient administrative offices in China.
The County Office is meticulously organized along three main axes: left, center, and right. Progressing from south to north along the central axis, one encounters the county gate, ceremonial gate, memorial archway, grand hall, magistrate's residence, secondary hall, inner chambers, and more, extending all the way to South Heng Street. The architectural layout and functional arrangement of Pingyao Ancient County Office mirror the grandeur of an imperial palace in miniature.
Within its precincts, visitors can marvel at a myriad of ancient documents and a significant collection of historical instruments of punishment. The essence of Ming and Qing dynastic county offices is vividly preserved, exuding an air of solemnity. Behind the County Office lies the "Observing Clouds Tower," where the county magistrate would observe the weather after meals, reflecting the crucial role of agriculture in the feudal economy of ancient Pingyao.
