Renowned for its pristine, deep blue waters and serene beauty, it is considered a sacred site by many visitors who come to admire its splendor and offer quiet prayers. Reaching this alpine lake is a pilgrimage in itself.
  • Peak Ascents and Vistas: Currently, access to the main peak and Heaven Lake is available from three primary slopes: the North Slope, the West Slope, and the South Slope. Each offers a distinct experience:
    • The North Slope ascent involves navigating more rocky terrain, and the immediate viewing area at the top can be narrower.
    • The West Slope and South Slope generally provide broader, more expansive panoramic views of the lake and surrounding caldera.
    • A crucial note for all visitors: the mountain's summit weather is notoriously volatile and can change in an instant. Clouds and fog frequently shroud the lake. Statistically, the probability of obtaining a clear, unobstructed view of Heaven Lake is highest during the months of July through September.

Admission Fees and Transportation Ticket structures are primarily slope-specific and often combine entry with necessary shuttle bus services.

  • North Scenic Area (Beipo):
    • Combination Ticket (Full Price): 225 RMB. This includes the entrance ticket, the mandatory eco-friendly bus journey within the reserve, and a round-trip ticket for the special池北旅游班线车 (Chibei Tourist Shuttle) that ascends to the peak area.
    • Combination Ticket (Concession Price): 172.5 RMB.
    • Entrance Ticket Only (Full Price): 105 RMB.
    • Entrance Ticket Only (Concession Price): 52.5 RMB.
  • West Scenic Area (Xipo):
    • Combination Ticket (Full Price): 190 RMB. This covers the entrance ticket and the mandatory bus ticket for access.
    • Combination Ticket (Concession Price): 137.5 RMB.
    • Entrance Ticket Only (Full Price): 105 RMB.
    • Entrance Ticket Only (Concession Price): 52.5 RMB.

Important Note: Concession tickets typically apply to students (with valid ID), seniors, and children, as per standard Chinese scenic area policies. Prices and included services are subject to change. Special promotions may occur, such as the free entrance ticket offer for both North and West scenic areas from June 1 to June 30, 2022. Operating Hours Operating hours vary by slope and season. The following are general guidelines, but visitors must confirm with the official sources on the day of their visit, as times can shift due to weather or administrative decisions.

  • North Scenic Area:
    • May 1 - September 3: 07:00 - 17:00
    • September 4 - April 30 of the following year: 08:00 - 17:00
  • West Scenic Area:
    • Summer Operating Hours: 07:30 - 12:30 (Last entry for peak ascent is strictly enforced, often by late morning).
    • Winter Operating Hours: 08:30 - 12:30 (Last entry for peak ascent is strictly enforced).

Trip Planning Considerations

  • Suggested Duration: A full day is recommended to explore one of the slopes thoroughly, accounting for travel time from nearby towns, queueing for transport, the ascent, and time spent at the summit and other secondary sites like waterfalls and hot springs.
  • Best Time to Visit for Visibility: As highlighted, summer and early autumn (July-September) offer the best odds for clear skies and a view of Heaven Lake. However, this is also the peak tourist season.
  • Weather Preparedness: Regardless of the season, the summit is significantly colder and windier than the base. Prepare with layered clothing, windproof and waterproof outer layers, and sturdy footwear. Sun protection is also essential due to high-altitude UV exposure.
  • Altitude Awareness: The rapid ascent can cause mild altitude sickness for some. Pace yourself, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous activity if you feel unwell.

Beyond the Summit: The Wider Reserve While Heaven Lake is the star attraction, the Changbai Mountain National Nature Reserve encompasses vast, pristine wilderness. Depending on the slope you choose, you may also encounter magnificent waterfalls, dense virgin forests inhabited by rare wildlife, and natural hot springs where you can soak amidst the mountain air. Each slope provides access to a selection of these secondary trails and sights, making every visit unique.
