Planning Your Visit: Practical Information

Getting to Tiger Mouth

Reaching Tiger Mouth requires some planning, as it is located in a relatively remote area.

  • By Bus:

    • From Kunming: Direct buses to Yuanyang depart from Kunming South Bus Station. There are typically three daily departures (around 10:20 AM, 12:30 PM, and 7:00 PM). The fare is approximately 139 RMB per person, and the journey takes 5-6 hours. Most buses terminate at Nansha Town (the new county seat).
    • From Nansha to Xinjie: Frequent minibuses connect Nansha Town to Xinjie Town (the old county seat, closer to the terraces), costing about 10 RMB per person. They operate on a rolling basis from approximately 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
    • Local Transport to the Site: From Xinjie Town to the scenic area gates, and between different viewing platforms within the terraces, you can find shared minivans or面包车 (mianbaoche). Fares for these short trips typically range from 5 to 10 RMB.
    • Alternative Routes: You can also travel from Kunming to Jianshui or Gejiu by bus or train, and then transfer to a local bus heading to Yuanyang.

  • By Chartered Car: For greater flexibility and convenience, especially for visiting multiple sites in one day, chartering a private car from Xinjie (Old Town) is a popular option. Approximate costs are:

    • A full-day tour of the main terrace areas: around 300 RMB.
    • A round trip to Tiger Mouth specifically: about 100 RMB.
    • A half-day trip to Duoyishu for sunrise: 150-200 RMB.

Ticketing and Fees

The Yuanyang Terraces operate on a unified ticket system for its major scenic spots, including Tiger Mouth.

  • One-Day Pass: A full-day pass costs 100 RMB (half-price 50 RMB for eligible visitors). It provides single-entry access to the Qingkou Hani Ethnic Village, Tiger Mouth, Bada, and Duoyishu terraces on the day of purchase.
  • Multi-Day Pass: A 10-day pass costs 180 RMB (half-price 90 RMB). It allows multiple entries to the four mentioned sites over a ten-day validity period.
  • Annual Pass: Priced at 360 RMB (half-price 180 RMB), this pass grants access to the four sites for one full year.

  • Suggested Duration: Plan to spend 1 to 3 hours at the Tiger Mouth area, especially if you intend to wait for and photograph the sunset.
