Suixuan Cheng General's Yamen: A Historical Marvel in Hohhot

Suixuan Cheng General's Yamen, situated west of the Drum Tower in Hohhot's new city, stands as a testament to the strategic initiatives of the Qing Dynasty during the Yongzheng era (1723-1735). In an effort to fortify the northwestern frontier, a new city was erected 2.5 kilometers northeast of the old city, hosting Manchu Eight Banners soldiers. Construction began in the 13th year of Yongzheng's reign (1735) and was completed in the fourth year of Qianlong (1739). Named Suixuan Cheng, it appointed a General to oversee the region and command troops stationed in Southern Mongolia and the garrisons in Datong and Xuanhua.

Architectural Grandeur: The Yamen, occupying an expansive 15,000 square meters, adheres to the format of a first-rank official's Yamen for frontier defense. A towering screen stands at the entrance, flanked by a pair of majestic stone lions. The complex boasts three main halls, with a central hall for official functions, flanked by east and west side halls. A private residence for the General is located at the rear, totaling 132 rooms. Notably, during the Republican era, it served as the seat of the Suixuan Provincial Government, and General Fu Zuoyi's office remains remarkably well-preserved.

Historical Significance: Designated as an autonomous region cultural heritage site, Suixuan Cheng General's Yamen was pivotal in the Qing Dynasty's administration of the region. The Yamen underwent several renovations but has largely retained its original layout and structure.
