Jingxian Sarira Pagoda: A Stalwart Monument Echoing Ancient Whispers

The Jingxian Sarira Pagoda, originally named the "Shakyamuni Sarira Stupa," graces the northwest corner of the former "Kaifu Temple" within the city of Jingxian. Despite the temple's demise, the pagoda endures, colloquially known as the Jingzhou Pagoda. Rising majestically to thirteen stories, the pagoda takes the form of an eight-sided pyramid, soaring to a height of 63.85 meters with a base circumference of 50.5 meters. Each side of the pagoda features an entrance, and within its interior, a spiral staircase with hundreds of steps winds its way to the pinnacle, affording panoramic views of the surroundings. Crowning this architectural marvel is a 2.05-meter-tall copper gourd, beneath which sits a 3.3-meter-tall iron wire mesh pedestal. When the wind caresses its structure, the mesh and the openings on the pagoda create a symphony reminiscent of ocean waves, earning it the poetic moniker of the "Ancient Pagoda's Wind and Waves." The exact era of the pagoda's construction remains elusive, but according to records in the "Jingxian Annals," the upper levels of the ancient tower bear inscriptions suggesting restoration during the Qi and Sui dynasties, placing its origin in the Northern Wei period. Following this historical thread, the pagoda could be nearly 1500 years old.
