Beijing Layover Express: Imperial Highlights
A focused exploration of one of China's four great Buddhist mountains, the sacred abode of Guanyin.
Day 1: Arrival and the Heart of Putuoshan
Morning: Journey to the Island
Your spiritual journey begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in downtown Hangzhou. A comfortable 4-hour drive brings you to Zhujiajian pier, where you will board a ferry for the final 15-minute leg to the sacred shores of Putuoshan Island.
Afternoon: Exploring Ancient Temples and Sacred Grounds
Upon arrival, your pilgrimage begins at the historic Puji Temple. Established in 916 AD, this is the oldest and largest temple on the island, featuring a beautiful lotus pond at its entrance. Following this, a park bus will transport you to the eastern side of the island to enjoy a leisurely walk along the expansive One Thousand Step Beach, where you can absorb the serene atmosphere of the clean sea and sky.
Your exploration continues with a visit to the Unwilling to Leave Temple. Adjacent to it lies the revered Purple Bamboo Forest, traditionally believed to be the original ashram of Avalokitesvara (the Goddess of Mercy). A short walk from here brings you to the island's iconic landmark: the majestic 33-meter-high Giant Avalokitesvara Buddha Statue.
