Dongying History Museum
A Regional Treasury: Unveiling the Cradle of Qi Culture
I. An Introduction to the Museum
Nestled in Guangrao County, Dongying City, Shandong Province, the Dongying History Museum stands as a premier comprehensive local museum and one of the first designated Patriotism Education Bases in both Shandong Province and Dongying City. Originally established as the Guangrao County Museum in 1993, the museum occupies a spacious site of over 30 acres at the northern end of Yuehe Road. Its location is culturally significant, situated east of Yuehe Road and north of the Cultural Square, connecting to the Guandi Temple and Sun Wu Memorial Hall on its east, bordering the scenic Yuehe Park to the south, and adjacent to the Guangrao Hotel to the north.
The museum's architecture is a striking example of classical Chinese landscape design. The main exhibition building, predominantly two stories with a three-story section, presents a majestic and elegant facade. With a total floor area of 6,821 square meters, including 3,500 square meters dedicated to exhibition space, it holds the distinction of being the largest regional museum in northern Shandong. Its collections are both extensive and exceptional, housing over 5,000 cultural relics, of which more than 320 are classified as Grade III National Treasures or above. These prized artifacts have garnered significant attention from historians and archaeologists alike.
II. Permanent Exhibition Galleries: A Journey Through Time
The museum's narrative unfolds across nine thematic exhibitions spread over three floors, offering a deep dive into the region's prehistoric roots, historical evolution, and cultural achievements.
A. First Floor: Ancient Foundations and Artistic Mastery
The western hall on the first floor hosts the Prehistoric Culture Exhibition. This section vividly illustrates the production methods and daily life during the Dawenkou and Longshan cultural periods through models, photographs, and a rich array of historical artifacts. A nationally pioneering feature is the full-scale reconstruction of an actual archaeological excavation site. A centerpiece of this exhibition is material related to the earliest known successful case of trepanation (skull surgery) in China, discovered at the Fujia site, highlighting the profound historical depth of the Guangrao area.
The eastern hall presents two distinct displays. The Exhibition of Selected Museum Collection showcases a curated selection of exquisite artifacts ranging from the Yueshi Culture period down to the Ming and Qing dynasties, tracing the historical continuum of Guangrao. The adjacent Stone Sculpture Exhibition pays homage to the region's artistic heritage. It features a collection of Buddhist stone statues and steles, characterized by their imposing size and fluid lines, which reflect both the exceptional carving skills of local artisans and the development of Buddhist culture in southern Dongying.
Flanking the central hall is the Guangrao Brief History Exhibition. Utilizing maps, it details the administrative changes, name evolution, and establishment of Guangrao through different historical epochs. It is supplemented with photographs depicting major events, notable historical figures, and scenic spots. This area is also dignified by bronze statues of four eminent personalities from Guangrao's history: Sun Wu (the ancient military strategist), Ouyang Sheng, Ni Kuan, and Qi Gongzhi. Ancient musical instruments, including bianzhong (chime bells) and bianqing (stone chimes), are displayed here, offering a unique sensory connection to the past.
B. Second Floor: Modern Struggles and Cultural Flourishing
The western hall on the second floor combines political history with artistic refinement. The Exhibition on the History of the Chinese Communist Party in Guangrao comprehensively documents the establishment, development, and growth of the Party organization in Guangrao from the May Fourth Movement to the founding of the People's Republic. It employs dioramas, photographs, and physical objects, most notably featuring the earliest Chinese-translated version of The Communist Manifesto, detailing its circulation and impact.
Sharing the space is the Exhibition of Selected Paintings and Calligraphy. This gallery presents nearly 50 works by renowned Ming and Qing dynasty artists such as Zhang Ruitu, Ren Xiong, Liu Yong, Xu Lianpo, Bada Shanren (Zhu Da), Lu Zhi, and Gu Yanwu. The majority of these pieces are displayed for the first time, representing significant artistic value.
The eastern hall is dedicated to the Special Exhibition on the Origin and Development of Lüju Opera. As one of China's eight major opera genres, Lüju was born and flourished in the Dongying region. This exhibition chronicles its glorious journey through textual explanations, scene recreations, photographs, and a display of nearly 200 items including original scripts, costumes, stage props, musical instruments, and performance photographs, underscoring Lüju's important status in Chinese theatrical arts.
The central hall on this level presents the Guangrao Folk Customs Exhibition. It features a collection of nearly 400 items, including production tools, household utensils, textiles, and folk handicrafts used in Guangrao over the past century, along with two restored period scenes. This exhibition offers an intimate glimpse into the authentic and unadorned local traditions and lifestyle.
C. Third Floor: Contemporary Achievements
The entire third floor is devoted to the Guangrao County Achievement Exhibition Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Dongying's City Status. This modern exhibition showcases the county's remarkable progress over two decades across fifteen domains, including the significant enhancement of comprehensive national economic strength, the pursuit of new industrialization, advancements in agriculture, and the vigorous development of the tertiary sector, all under the leadership of the Dongying municipal government.
