Datong Volcanic Group
Datong Volcanic Group, one of China's Quaternary volcanic formations, ceased eruptions approximately 60,000 years ago. With over 30 known volcanoes, it primarily spans the eastern part of the Datong Basin, categorized into four regions: east, west, south, and north. Among them, the western zone, situated northeast of the current Datong County, boasts the densest and most spectacular volcanic cone landscapes. The elevations of these volcanoes range mostly between 1,100 and 1,400 meters. Perhaps due to the contrast with the flat and expansive river valleys, these volcanic cones rise abruptly, resembling otherworldly specters, evoking a sense of majesty and mystery. Notable peaks include Wolf's Nest Mountain, Gold Mountain, Black Mountain, Pavilion Mountain, Ge Lao Mountain, Twin Mountains, Horseshoe Mountain, Tiger Mountain, and Haotianji Mountain.
