Architectural Grandeur and Layout

The museum's story began in 1991, with its development unfolding in two significant phases. The first phase, the Main Hall, was completed in March 1993, followed by the second phase, the Thematic Halls, in May 1999. Representing a total investment of 14 million RMB, the complex spans an impressive 10,000 square meters. Its architectural style is a deliberate homage to tradition, designed as a classical Siheyuan (courtyard) complex. This elegant structure comprises the central Main Hall, flanked by the North and South Thematic Halls, creating a harmonious and enclosed cultural space.

The Imposing Forecourt and Main Entrance The visitor's experience begins before entering the building. A 68-meter-wide openwork wall fronts the street, leading into a spacious forecourt. Here, a colorful musical fountain takes center stage, while two majestic stone lions stand guard on either side of the entrance platform, symbolizing protection and prestige. The exterior walls of the Main Hall's lobby are adorned with two massive fiberglass, bronze-imitation reliefs. One depicts ancient legends associated with Changde, weaving myth into the city's fabric. The other captures pivotal figures and events from Changde's modern history, grounding the narrative in tangible reality.
The Heart of the Museum: The Main Hall Upon entering the Main Hall, visitors are immediately greeted by a breathtaking sight on the ground floor's front wall: "The Peach Blossom Paradise," currently the largest Tang-style tri-color glaze mural in Hunan Province. This magnificent artwork sets a poetic tone for the journey ahead. The hall's centerpiece is the Central Grand Hall, a cavernous space measuring 30 meters long, 24 meters wide, and soaring 21.8 meters high. Crowned by a glass ceiling that floods the area with natural light, this versatile and comprehensive exhibition space is both awe-inspiring and functional. Beyond the central hall lies the rear section, a fully enclosed area housing ten standard exhibition rooms and four文物库房 (cultural relic storage rooms). This secure zone is dedicated to the meticulous preservation and display of the museum's historical artifact collection.
Specialized Spaces: The Thematic Halls Connected to the Main Hall, the North and South Thematic Halls provide dedicated space for rotating and specialized exhibitions. Containing three standard exhibition rooms between them, these halls allow the museum to explore diverse subjects in depth, from contemporary art and photography to specific historical themes, ensuring there is always something new to discover.

Changde Historical文物 Exhibition This foundational exhibition forms the chronological backbone of the museum. It guides visitors through the long and layered history of the Changde region, from prehistoric times through various dynasties. Artifacts on display—including pottery, bronzes, ceramics, coins, and documents—tell the story of human settlement, technological development, artistic achievement, and daily life in this part of China.
Changde Folk Customs Exhibition Moving beyond political history and high art, this exhibition delves into the vibrant intangible cultural heritage of the local people. It showcases traditional clothing, handicrafts, festival celebrations, wedding and funeral customs, and everyday tools. This collection vividly illustrates the social practices, beliefs, and creative spirit that have shaped the community's identity over generations.
The "Root of China" Exhibition: Giant Root Sculptures A unique and awe-inspiring highlight of the museum is its exhibition of巨型根雕 (giant root carvings), collectively titled "The Root of China." These extraordinary artworks are sculpted from massive, ancient tree roots. Artists have skillfully harnessed the natural forms, textures, and energies of the roots to create intricate, large-scale representations of Chinese mythological figures, legendary scenes, animals, and landscapes. This exhibition represents a remarkable fusion of natural wonder and human artistry, symbolizing a deep connection to the land and cultural origins.
