Dashiwei Tiankeng Group Scenic Area
Subtitle: A Journey into the Depths: Exploring the World's Premier Sinkhole Complex in Leye, Guangxi
1. Introduction to the Leye Dashiwei Tiankeng Group
Nestled within the karst landscapes of Baise, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Leye Dashiwei Tiankeng Group stands as a monumental testament to the power of natural geological forces. Recognized globally as the "World's Tiankeng Museum," this cluster represents the pinnacle of sinkhole formations on Earth, distinguished by its rarity, peculiarity, precipitousness, grandeur, magnificence, scenic beauty, and unique ecological environment. Among its 26 documented tiankengs, seven have achieved world-class status: Dashiwei, Dengjiawo, Datuo, Chuandong, Baidong, Shenmu, and Ladong. These sites collectively encapsulate the essence of global sinkhole phenomena. The area's exceptional karst topography has earned it an impressive array of accolades, including designation as a UNESCO Global Geopark, an International Karst and Cave Exploration and Scientific Research Base, a National AAAAA Tourist Attraction, a National Geopark of China, a National Forest Park of China, a Scientific Expedition and Adventure Base for Chinese Youth, and the "Hometown of Chinese Orchids."
2. The Crown Jewel: Dashiwei Tiankeng
2.1. Scale and Supremacy The most iconic of all, the Dashiwei Tiankeng, holds seven world records for its extraordinary characteristics. It sits at an elevation of approximately 1,468 meters above sea level and plunges to a depth of about 613 meters. Its elliptical mouth stretches roughly 600 meters from east to west and 420 meters from north to south, encompassing a staggering volume of around 67 million cubic meters. This colossal scale alone inspires awe and firmly establishes its status as a premier natural wonder.
2.2. Unique Atmospheric Phenomena and Geological Marvels The tiankeng's topography, marked by three opposing peaks on its eastern, southern, and western rims, creates a unique microclimate. This often leads to the formation of a mesmerizing "sea of clouds" that fills the vast chasm, resembling an ethereal, misty ocean. On occasion, visitors may be fortunate enough to witness a mysterious "Buddha's Halo," an optical phenomenon that adds a layer of mystical allure to the site. Furthermore, on the highest cliff face within the tiankeng, a strikingly clear and complete natural rock formation resembles a detailed map of China. This incredible natural artwork is a source of endless fascination and wonder.
3. The Hidden World Below: The Underground Primeval Forest
Beneath the symbolic "map," at the very bottom of the Dashiwei Tiankeng, lies one of its most profound secrets: the world's largest known underground primeval forest. Covering an area of approximately 96,000 square meters, this secluded ecosystem thrives in near-total isolation from the surface world. Intriguingly, the forest's area is a precise mathematical multiple of China's total territorial land area, a coincidence that sparks both scientific curiosity and philosophical contemplation. This dense, ancient forest hosts a unique assemblage of flora and fauna that have adapted to the low-light, humid conditions, representing an invaluable biological refuge and a living laboratory for studying evolution and ecology.
