The Geological Marvel: Travertine Landscapes The soul of Huanglong lies in its breathtaking travertine formations. Over millennia, the deposition of calcium carbonate from flowing water has created a spectacular, golden-hued valley that cascades down the mountain like a giant, slumbering dragon—hence the name "Huanglong," meaning "Yellow Dragon." This vast, intricately structured, and brilliantly colored landscape is a rare example of karst topography and forms the park's central scenic attraction.

The Changing Colors of the Ponds: The most enchanting feature is the series of thousands of terraced, travertine ponds. Their waters, ranging from azure and turquoise to emerald green and mustard yellow, are not static. The colors shift magically throughout the day, influenced by the mineral content, the angle of sunlight, and the reflections of the surrounding forests and sky. This ever-changing palette is what earns Huanglong its poetic nickname, "the terrestrial Jade Pool."

Planning Your Visit: Practical Information

Best Time to Visit The optimal period to experience Huanglong in its full glory is during the summer and autumn months (approximately June through October). This season coincides with the rainy period, ensuring the ponds are at their most voluminous and vibrant. The water levels are high, the colors are intensely saturated, and the contrast with the green forests and clear blue skies is utterly photogenic. While accessible in other seasons, winter brings snow and frozen ponds, offering a different, serene beauty, and spring sees the melting of snow gradually refilling the pools.

Getting There: Transportation Options Reaching Huanglong requires some planning due to its remote location. The main access points are Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (JZH), Songpan County, the town of Chuanzhusi, and Jiuzhaigou Valley.

From Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport: Private shuttle buses operate between the airport, Huanglong, and Jiuzhaigou. These buses typically allow for a stay of about 4 hours at Huanglong. It's important to note they are privately run, depart only when full (which can involve long waits), and may cease operations in the evening or during the low season based on passenger flow.
From Songpan County or Chuanzhusi Town: Daily buses heading to Mianyang, Jiangyou, or Pingwu from Songpan pass by Huanglong. You can also board these buses in Chuanzhusi. However, availability is not guaranteed as buses might be full, and schedules can be irregular.
From Jiuzhaigou Valley: There are typically two direct bus services per day connecting Jiuzhaigou to Huanglong.
Important Note: Public transportation to the nearby Mounigou area is generally not available.

Admission Fees and Operating Hours * Opening Hours: The park is open daily from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with last admission at 4:30 PM. * Ticket Prices: Fees vary by season: * High Season (June 1 - December 15): Entrance ticket: 60 RMB. * Low Season (December 16 - May 31): Entrance ticket: 170 RMB. * Cable Car: Round-trip cable car ticket costs 80 RMB; a one-way downhill ticket is 40 RMB.

Ticket Discounts and Policies A detailed discount policy is in place. All discounted or free tickets require valid, verifiable original identification.

Free Admission: Granted to eligible individuals including children under 6 or 1.2m tall, seniors aged 65+, seniors aged 60-64 on non-national holidays, active-duty and disabled military personnel, active/retired/disabled firefighters, disabled persons, veterans of the Korean War, and others with specific credentials.
Half-Price Admission: Available to full-time students (undergraduate and below) with a student ID, youths aged 7-18, and religious personnel with valid documentation.
Regional Promotions (Subject to Change): Special promotions, such as reduced-rate tickets for residents of Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality, are occasionally offered during specific periods (e.g., summer months). It is always advisable to check for the latest official announcements before your visit.

Suggested Duration To fully appreciate the main valley at a comfortable pace, including the cable car ride and walks along the boardwalks, a minimum of 3 to 5 hours is recommended.
